Helping Hands
Let’s say “0” represents Source. All potential and all choices, even “no choice” are represented in this number, or rather the void in place of a number. Once there is a thought in the mind the number “1” is created. “1” represents the first cause, consciousness, the ability to declare “I am”. “1” is the dream, the thought, the conceivability that something was possible. This was covered in the Origins chapter where 1 represents the spiritual impulse to create something.
Out of “1” there emerged the idea of creating another that is like the creation of “1”. The number “2” represents duality. This became the birth of comparisons, judgments, and the idea of being separated from Source. We already covered in the last chapter how “2” represented the ego. Opposites begin to attack each other - good vs. evil, right vs. wrong. East vs. West, conservative vs. liberal, male vs. female, rich vs. poor, and on and on. This phenomena was addressed as the “Shadow”. Out of dualistic consciousness the feelings of separation occur. Some of the most painful being Shame, Guilt, and Fear.
Is it a coincidence that Christians speak of a Holy Trinity which includes The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit? The third corner of that triangle, the Holy Spirit, is apparently the connection between Father (Heaven) and Son (Man).
In our story, “3” represents Helping Hands, or what Campbell described as “Supernatural Aid”. It is at this point in the story someone or something enters into the adventure offering help to the hero. It’s also not unusual for the hero to find a loving connection at this phase in the story. Like Dorothy, you may have your own Scarecrows, Tin Men, or Lions to come your aid. It was en route to Alderaan that Luke teamed up with Obi-Wan Kenobi (representing Wisdom or "Brain"), Han Solo (possibly representing “the Heart” since Solo becomes involved with the romantic subplot of the story), and Chewbacca (the Beast of Courage). Gifts, or magic talismans, will be bestowed on the hero linking the future to the present. The ruby slippers will one day prove to be the magic needed to get back to Kansas. The light saber, or rather Luke’s choice to lie it down, will save lives - both for the Son to live and the Father to return from the Dark Side.
Once you receive the gifts you must be willing to use them. In the last chapter we discussed “Control Dramas”, which is how your ego, either through your own mind or under negative influences of others, creates feelings of Shame, Guilt, Fear, and so on. The reversal of these Control Dramas are called “Coaching Competencies”. Once you recognize a Control Drama happen you can reverse by performing one of the following Coaching Competencies…
Intimidator is reversed by Powerful Observation: “You are admirable for persisting your dream.”
Interrogator is reversed by Powerful Question: “Yes, I have failed many times. Why do I fail and what do I need in order to succeed this time?”
Aloof Behavior is reversed by Tuning In: This is the act of listening to someone else with your entire being. Listening meaning having the ability to release all agenda and enter into another person’s world.
“Poor Me” is reversed by Powerful Request: This is the act of getting out of your own head and taking action that will move you toward your goal. I like to think of a Powerful Request, or action step, as merging the intellectual world with the physical world.
These reversals will create “positive” feelings like Courage, Trust, Willingness, Determination and so on.
The Helping Hands in this chapter comes in the form of exploring the more transitory emotions that will eventually lead the mind to experience Love, Joy, Peace, and Enlightenment. Let’s assume for the moment that we are the cause of the events in our lives, not merely victims to the effects. If this assumption happens to be true then understanding and mastering the emotions in this chapter will bring you friends, gifts, miracles, and insights that lead to your Quest’s fulfillment.
Now is the time to reach out to your friends or talk to people who might help you. When you leave your workout feeling uplifted, I recommend making that contact right away!
